I have had occasions where my toilet was leaking around the base of the toilet. Or in some cases I have had to remove my toilet when installing a new floor. When this has happened I have had to replace the wax ring on the bottom of my toilet. I want to tell you how to fix it and save yourself time and money. It is a relatively easy job that I believe any body should be able to do.
First, lets get the tools and parts we need. You will need a pair of channel locks, adjustable wrench, a bucket and large sponge. You will also need to purchase a replacement wax ring. You can go to any local hardware store and purchase wax_ringsone. Ask questions to make sure you get the proper one if you are unsure.
Now you will need to turn your water off to your toilet as in any how to fix it project. Flush the toilet. The tank should empty for the most part. Take your sponge and soak up any remaining water inside of the tank. You will also want to remove the water from inside of the toilet bowl. You can use the sponge to soak up the water and get all of the water out of your toilet.
Now, you will need to disconnect the water line from you toilet. Usually this is just a plastic nut that will need to be loosened and then the water line can be carefully pulled away from the base of the tank.
How to fix a Toilet 6Once you have all of the water out of you toilet and your water line removed, you will need to remove the bolts that are holding your toilet to the floor. On the sides at the bottom, there should be two bolts. Remove the nuts from these bolts. Your toilet is now loose from the floor. You should be able to remove the toilet by lifting straight up. The wax ring will probable be causing some resistance but just pull straight up.
Carefully, lay the toilet down so that the bottom is accessible. Remove the old wax ring and dispose of it properly. On the floor, you should see the flange with two bolts sticking up. Clean this off of any wax that may be on it as well. How to fix a toilet 4
Now take your new wax ring and put it on the flange, making sure it is equally around the hole in the flange. Now, carefully, take your toilet and reinstall it with the bolts on either side of the base of the toilet. Take the nuts and tighten the nuts so that your toilet will be secure.
