Digital Light Projector is a TV that projects onto a screen. The projector light for these are mercury vapor lamps and can run very hot. If you own one of these DLPs you will notice in the back, there is a light when the set is on. The TV has several fans inside that are designed to keep the components cool and the lamp cool as well.
Many times I have seen these lamps go out before they should. What is the reason for this and what can you do to know how to fix it? If the fan itself does not keep the lamp cool this can cause the lamp to go out before it should. DLP LampBut, more often than not it is because the fan is not allowed to operate properly. You see the fan needs to have air flow. So you need to make sure the TV has adequate space around it so it can have proper air flow. Don’t pile things up around your TV where the vent holes on the TV are blocked. Most of these TVs have protection, so that if the TV does get too hot it will shut the TV off. If your TV shuts off while watching it, make sure that you do have proper air flow around the TV. If the area is blocked, clear the area to insure that you are getting proper air flow.
If the fan gets clogged with dust it can cause the fan to not cool properly as well, I want to tell you how to fix it. You Clogged Fancan remove the lamp and you will be able to see the fan that cools the lamp. Make sure that the lamp has had adequate time to cool down before doing this. Remove the lamp. If you have an air compressor that is great. Just take you air compressor and blow off the fan and the surrounding area where the lamp is mounted. You can also purchase cans of air. Use the air to blow out around the fan and remove as much dust as you can. Replace your lamp. Do not physically touch the lamp as this will cause the lamp to blow too soon. Once you have the set together it should operate fine. You may want to do this about once a year to insure that the fan is kept clean.
This TV needs to be plugged directly into an AC outlet. Don’t plug it into a cable box or satellite box. The outlets on the back of these type of boxes are shut off when you turn the cable box or satellite receiver off. The reason you don’t want to plug into these boxes is that a DLP does not shut off as soon as you turn the TV off. The fans inside will continue to run so they can cool the lamp down before shutting completely off. By Cable Box (rear)unplugging a DLP or shutting off your cable or satellite box you are not allowing this to happen. This will cause the lamp to not cool down properly, which in turn will cause the life of that lamp to be shortened. You do not want this to happen.
Most lamps will cost you any where from $200 to $400 or even higher.
Glorious DayProtect your lamp and make sure that it is allowed to cool and it should last you a long time. Knowing how to fix it and allow it to stay cool can save you hundreds in the long run and keep your TV operating properly.
